Vincent sat down by the lake. The children were convinced that there is a mermaid living in their lake and he agreed to check it out, since none of the other adults would believe them. So he sat to wait and see if the mermaid would come to the surface.

Anna stayed a few feet below the surface of the water and just watched him. She usually avoided the adults, but there was something about him… The children had mentioned someone who would believe them. Maybe this was him? She was debating with herself about what she should do. She didn’t want him thinking the children were liars, but she also wasn’t sure she wanted to be found.

Hearing thoughts is a little bit different, but it’s much easier with another empath. She shrugged. Anna. You’re the one the children were talking about, aren’t you?

He stared down into the water. He knelt down beside the lake. He couldn’t really see anyone, but he felt like there was someone there. It was a vague feeling. And it was different than any of his usual feelings. “They were right. You are there, aren’t you? Are you the mermaid the children have talked about?” Why was she not coming to the surface. Could she see him well enough to be intimidated? “I don’t bite. Often.” He joked with a kind smile.

She blushed. How had he known? She reached out gently with her mind and let out a soft “oh.” She hadn’t met many other empaths. That didn’t bode well for her plan of just hiding, since even if he hadn’t felt her before, he surely would now. She took a deep breath before swimming up to the surface, her head coming out completely dry. “I do,” she replied, offering a small smile. She was only joking a little bit.

He gasped slightly when he felt something. Almost like a touch, but not a physical one. He’d never felt anything like it before. He watched with fascination as she came to the surface. He tilted his head. “Did you– I felt you. How–” He paused, and hesitantly, he reached out with his mind.

She took his tendril of thought and sent him a feeling of reassurance. Hello. She smiled softly at him. I think we have something in common. Well, at least one thing, I suppose.
