Vincent sat down by the lake. The children were convinced that there is a mermaid living in their lake and he agreed to check it out, since none of the other adults would believe them. So he sat to wait and see if the mermaid would come to the surface.

Anna stayed a few feet below the surface of the water and just watched him. She usually avoided the adults, but there was something about him… The children had mentioned someone who would believe them. Maybe this was him? She was debating with herself about what she should do. She didn’t want him thinking the children were liars, but she also wasn’t sure she wanted to be found.

Hearing thoughts is a little bit different, but it’s much easier with another empath. She shrugged. Anna. You’re the one the children were talking about, aren’t you?

He nodded his head. The other adults are fairly skeptical about the supernatural, despite the fact that I’ve been with them my whole life. What have the children told you? She hadn’t reacted to his appearance, and he is in the shadows, perhaps she hasn’t seen him, or perhaps she was expecting it.

Empathy is easy to explain away, so that’s not surprising. That had to be the supernatural occurrence he was talking about. Even if it felt like he was referring to something else. They haven’t told me much. For some reason they prefer to talk about me. She smiled. I can’t imagine why.
