Vincent sat down by the lake. The children were convinced that there is a mermaid living in their lake and he agreed to check it out, since none of the other adults would believe them. So he sat to wait and see if the mermaid would come to the surface.

Anna stayed a few feet below the surface of the water and just watched him. She usually avoided the adults, but there was something about him… The children had mentioned someone who would believe them. Maybe this was him? She was debating with herself about what she should do. She didn’t want him thinking the children were liars, but she also wasn’t sure she wanted to be found.

She tilted her head. What else is there? If— if I may ask. If anyone would understand whatever it was, it was her. The woman living at the bottom of a lake underneath New York City. I’m… You’ve already seen the most interesting part of me. Everything else is pretty disappointing comparatively.

He considered if he should show her or not. He won’t want to hide himself down here. It was better to show her, he thought. Please don’t be frightened. He moved out of the shadows and put his hood down. We don’t really know what I am. I was found abandoned outside of St. Vincent’s Hospital. It’s how I got my name.

I- I— She shook her head. “I can’t see you, Vincent. Not— not in the way you’re trying to show me.” She bit her lip. I’m blind. If you really want me to see, you could come with the children some time or you could see if you have a decent reflection in the water. I can see through other people’s eyes.
