Anna stayed a few feet below the surface of the water and just watched him. She usually avoided the adults, but there was something about him… The children had mentioned someone who would believe them. Maybe this was him? She was debating with herself about what she should do. She didn’t want him thinking the children were liars, but she also wasn’t sure she wanted to be found.
She smiled at his excitement. The children had reacted in a similar way. Maybe she was a little bit interesting. She tilted her head and frowned slightly. She didn’t feel frightened or disgusted or anything like that. Just a little bit confused as she tried to think if she had ever heard about a being like him. That’s something else we have in common, you know. I’m only pretending to look this human.
Her reaction wasn’t like most people’s reactions. He didn’t feel any fear. He did feel confusion and probably some curiosity. How are you pretending to look human? Can you change your appearance?
She nodded. I could show you if you want. It could also wait. I don’t want you to get overwhelmed. It was a lot to take in. He had come looking for a mermaid, though, so it wasn’t like telling someone who thought she was human.
